Frequent Urination

One of the diabetes signs that could lead to a stroke is frequent urination. The reason why this happens is that the blood has too much glucose in it. When that happens, the kidneys are working too hard to get rid of the glucose, so the body needs to urinate often throughout this process. If your elderly loved one urinates once an hour or even more than that, they should see their doctor about this as it isn’t normal. The doctor may need to alter the treatment plan. Then, you or a home care provider may need to track how much or how little your elderly loved one is urinating once the new treatment plan begins.

Losing Weight

Has your elderly loved one been losing a lot of weight suddenly? If so, it could be that their diabetes is not being managed well. It is crucial to find out the source of the problem before it leads to a stroke or other health problems.

The primary reason for this type of weight loss when someone has diabetes is that they urinate often which causes them to lose calories and water. When someone urinates that often, they are going to lose some weight. If your loved one has lost over a few pounds in a matter of days, you may need to take them to see their doctor.

Severe Fatigue

Another common sign of diabetes is severe fatigue. If your elderly loved one is feeling like this, it could be that their current diabetes treatments aren’t working well or they don’t have a treatment plan in place yet, so their diabetes is not being managed at all.

The body needs enough glucose to stay energized. However, with unmanaged diabetes, the glucose levels are off which can cause severe fatigue. If this continues, it can cause a stroke. If you or home care providers notice extreme fatigue in your elderly loved one that continues, be sure to have them go to a doctor to get checked out.
