How Seniors Can Get Their Vitamin D in the Winter Months

Senior Care in Bellville OH

Vitamin D is the vitamin that helps promote strong bones.  For seniors, especially senior women, who are at risk for osteoporosis, this is an essential nutrient to get each and every day.  As many know, humans get their vitamin D directly from exposure to sunlight.  However, for people living in cold climates or seniors who stay in the house for the majority of the day due to disability or chronic illness, vitamin D can sometimes be hard to get.  During the winter months, it is advised that older adults avoid going out when the weather is dangerous.  For some, this can mean staying indoors for weeks at a time.  So, how can seniors get sufficient vitamin D for healthy bones during the winter months?  Here are a few tips:

Eat Fatty Fish

Fish like salmon, tuna, trout, and mackerel are very rich in vitamin D.  These fatty fish are also high in omega 3 fatty acids which have their own health benefits, as well.  Fresh fish can be hard to come by in some states, but canned tuna is also a great source of vitamin D.

Drink Fortified Milk

Milk fortified with vitamin D is the ultimate bone-healthy food.  Not only do you get a good serving of vitamin D, but you also get calcium, too.  Calcium is also an essential nutrient for bone health.  It is important to note that not all dairy foods or milk substitutes (like soy milk) are fortified with vitamin D.  Check the label before you buy!

Enjoy Orange Juice

Some bottled orange juices are fortified with vitamin D just like milk.  This is a great alternative for seniors who are lactose intolerant or who have a hard time getting enough milk into their diet.

Take Supplements

A doctor may recommend vitamin D supplements for seniors who have a hard time getting enough vitamin D from the sun and from food sources.  It is important, however, for seniors to take vitamin D supplements exactly how the doctor directs.

Have Cereal for Breakfast

Many boxed cereals on the market today are fortified with vitamin D.  Eat them with fortified milk, and you will have a vitamin D rich breakfast.

Eat Eggs

The yolk of an egg is high in vitamin D.  Eggs can be a healthy part of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but seniors who are watching their cholesterol should limit their intake of egg yolks for heart health.
