National Nurses Week kicks off on May 6th, and it’s a time to celebrate the role nurses play in healthcare. In 1978, May 6th was designated National Nurses Recognition Day to celebrate the nurses in hospitals, medical practices, and home health care agencies. Skilled nursing care service is a level of care that only nurses can perform. It’s offered in a nursing home or in a patient’s home, which is often better for the patient as they get to be in a comfortable setting.
What nurses are part of a skilled nursing care agency and what services do they provide?
The Nurses Perform Skilled Nursing Care
Skilled Nursing Care Bucyrus OH – What Nurses Help With Skilled Nursing Care?A skilled nursing care agency has a variety of skilled professionals available. Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses (LPN) or licensed vocational nurses (LVN) provide a lot of the care. There are also nursing specialists in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology.
Registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical or vocational nurses both provide many of the same services, but an RN has more training and usually acts as the LPN or LVN’s supervisor. An LPN or LVN completes a year of nursing school and goes for licensing. An RN typically has three or four years of schooling and becomes licensed.
The LPN or LVN will perform medical nursing tasks and report to the RN. An RN partners with the doctor in providing the care your dad needs.
In addition to those nurses, there are a few others who will offer specialized care like diabetes education, physical therapy sessions in your dad’s home, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
What Services Are Offered?
Skilled nursing care services cover wound or incision care. If your dad had brain surgery after his stroke and has an incision to keep clean and bandaged, his nurse can do it. If the bleeding seems abnormal or there are signs of infection, he has a nurse who will work with the medical team to ensure the health issues are addressed quickly.
Nurses can administer medications, fluids, and nutrients through an IV, feeding tube, or injection. If your dad needed a catheter, his nurse can make sure it’s drained as needed and kept clean. When it’s no longer needed, his nurse can remove it without him having to go back to the hospital.
As he learns to walk, use his hands, and speak again, your dad will also work with a team of physical, occupational, and speech therapists. He can have these services at home and eliminate your need to get a vehicle that’s equipped with wheelchair ramps or space for the walker that he requires.
After your dad’s stroke, he will have RNs helping with medication administration, wound care, health assessments, and IV lines. He’s also going to need to work with respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech therapists. Much of this can be done in his home so that he is in an environment that lowers his stress.
Keep your dad from having to move out of his home to get the care he needs after his stroke. He can recuperate at home with the help of RNs and therapists. Learn more about skilled nursing care by calling an agency.
