Most seniors with limited mobility working with home care providers won’t be able to move around much. Many of them will have life challenges and physical struggles that make it hard for them to move around. This does not mean they should give up the things they love, it just means they need to adapt to new situations. Instead of doing a traditional garden, home care can help them with an alternative. Your loved one should go outside every day and be connected with nature as much as possible; gardening allows them to do that.
Here are some good ways a senior can still enjoy gardening even if they can’t move well.
Windowsill Plants
Your senior does not necessarily have to be outside to feel connected with nature. Smaller plants can easily be brought indoors and you can create a small garden inside. Herbs tend to do well in a kitchen window. Your loved one could also hang air plants or succulents inside to tend to. There are so many options when it comes to indoor plants and it’s time to find some that your senior mom or dad will want to care for. Keep in mind that home care may be able to help water a few plants.
Garden On The Deck
Even if a senior lives in an apartment they can still garden! Pay attention to how much sunshine is on the patio every day and find a few potted plants that will survive. Flowers tend to need at least 6-8 hours of sunshine and may not do well on the patio depending on where their apartment is located. However, there are tons of other plants that will thrive on an apartment patio.
Standing Garden
If your senior has a yard they may be able to walk from the door to outside. However, for a lot of seniors, bending over and kneeling can cause a tremendous amount of pain. Luckily, there are now standing garden beds that a senior can use. Buying one or two or even building one for your senior mom or dad can help them enjoy and grow whatever they want. There are tons of tools that can help a senior garden well into their final stages of life.
Use Containers
Instead of planning a whole yard, a senior can choose small containers or pots to grow things like tomatoes or flowers. Some vegetables and flowers do well in pots and that is something they can easily do on their own. This means instead of a massive raised bed a senior just needs to water and tend to one bigger pot. This can be something placed right on their back patio, in their kitchen, or anywhere they want. A senior should ensure it is located in the right area with a decent amount of sunlight.
Look For Useful Tools
There are now so many tools that a senior can use to make gardening easier. They can travel outside with a wheelchair and use a stool to sit near a raised garden bed. All of these things can be found and purchased to keep your senior comfortable while being outside.
