The PGA came up with the idea of celebrating golf in the month of August in the 1990s. Since then, it’s been a time to try the sport if you’re new to it or get back into it if you’re not. Golf is a great form of exercise for your dad and you both. Have you ever played? Is it a favorite pastime? For National Golf Month, get your dad to go golfing with you and embrace the game while he gets enough exercise. His home care aide can help him get prepared for the event.
He’ll Get More Than the 30 Minutes of Recommended Exercise
It’s recommended that you engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Golf is a good way to get exercise. Just don’t rent a golf cart if your dad is still fully mobile. If so, the average 18-hole course requires around six miles of walking. Even if he needs a cart between holes, he’ll still walk a lot as he walks to the tee and green.
With some comfortable shoes, your dad will easily walk around and get enough exercise that way. Go at his pace and as he builds up stamina and gets used to walking around a golf course, he’ll feel stronger and more energetic to get out and walk.
His Arms and Shoulders Get a Workout
People should get a mix of exercise throughout the week. In addition to walking, strength training, Yoga, and something aerobic are all recommended. As your dad carries a golf bag and swings the club, his arms, shoulders, and back get a workout, which is a good means of strength training.
He Works on Balance
Standing correctly and rotating to swing help your dad work out muscles that will help with balance. Walking around also helps tone the muscles that can help with a fall, but the different movements of swinging the club and following through on that swing help even more. By working on his balance, your dad lowers the risk of a fall.
Home Care Aides Prepare him for the Outside in the Sun and Fresh Air
Your dad will be outside in the sun when you play golf. That helps boost his mood, and it supplies him with the vitamin D he needs for strong bones. He also has the chance to breathe fresh air and listen to nature, which is relaxing and can ease stress.
Make sure he has a hat to shade his face and sunglasses to protect his eyes and eyelids. Sunscreen is also important for protecting his skin from UVA and UVB rays. He should reapply it every two hours.
When you can’t be around to help your dad, make sure he has the support of a home care aide. His caregiver can help him with housework, meals, daily exercise routines, and a lot more. Talk to our home care specialist to make the arrangements needed to support your dad.
