Your elderly loved one could experience a range of health conditions that are difficult to manage. One of the health conditions that many elderly people have is hydrocephalus. This means that there is cerebrospinal fluid in their brain. While there is not enough information out there yet about the exact cause of this condition, there are some symptoms that you can watch out for in your elderly loved one.

Symptoms of Hydrocephalus

There are numerous symptoms that often occur with someone who has hydrocephalus. These symptoms include the following:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headaches
• Double or blurry vision
• Balance problems
• Coordination issues
• Urinary incontinence
• Gait disturbances
• Personality and/or cognition changes
• Irritability
• Memory loss

These symptoms are caused by an excess build-up of fluid in the brain.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

With normal pressure hydrocephalus, your elderly loved one might also experience bladder control issues, trouble walking, and a progression of mental impairments. If your loved one does have normal pressure hydrocephalus, they might feel that they can’t move. They may even say that their feet are stuck. It is important to know that this type of hydrocephalus is often misdiagnosed and not treated properly.

There are numerous other health conditions that your elderly loved one might get diagnosed with instead of hydrocephalus when they actually have this condition. Your elderly loved one might be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, urinary incontinence, and a range of other health conditions.

If you think that your elderly loved one has hydrocephalus, you should have them see their doctor right away. Getting an accurate and proper diagnosis and treatment plan is necessary with hydrocephalus. If your elderly loved one’s doctor says they have another condition, but you are not convinced, you should get a second opinion, just to be sure. When your elderly loved one’s health is at risk, you should do all that you can to make sure they are getting the proper treatment.
