According to WebMD, “cancer starts when (cancer) cells in the body begin to grow out of control”. They can then spread to other areas of the body. For prostate cancer, what we see is cancer cells that grow uncontrollably in the prostrate, a gland found only in males. The treatments for prostate cancer typically include chemotherapy, surgery, cryotherapy, radiation, and/or hormonal therapy.
For elderly parents, there are some ways to prevent prostate cancer that they can begin doing today. These are:
1. Eat Certain Foods
What we put in our bodies directly affects our cells so we want to be sure to feed our bodies foods that will not aid in the development of cancer. To help prevent prostate cancer specifically, these are the foods you should be eating.
Vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower
Tomatoes and tomato sauce
Soy products and soy beans
Fish such as tuna and salmon
Flaxseed oil and walnuts.
These foods can be found at the local grocery store. Buying fresh vs canned with give the most nutrients, but canned is still a good option over not eating these foods at all. Talk to the elderly care professional and ask her to help prepare dishes that feature these foods as ingredients. Vegetable casseroles with either tuna or salmon can be frozen into single or double servings for any lunch or dinner.
2. Exercise
Getting exercise daily or a few times a week helps keep the body and immune system healthy. According to WebMD.com, “Being physically active and staying at a healthy body weight also can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Going for a walk, joining a gym, or taking an exercise class at the local community center are all ways a senior can stay healthy active.”
3. Get Regular Prostate Exams
Unfortunately, when it comes to prostate cancer, there are usually no symptoms in the early stages. That is why it is so important for seniors to have regular prostate exams. In between exams, seniors should be eating well and exercising to naturally help them prevent prostate cancer.
To make sure an aging parent is doing the right things to prevent prostate cancer, an elderly care provider can help. These professionals can help with meal preparation and driving an elderly parent to and from important doctor appointments. Besides, all this, they can help a senior staff active, provide companionship, help with grooming, dressing, and any other everyday tasks an elderly parent may need help with in their home.
