Caregiver in Crestline OH
When people age and start losing some of their mobility or good health, they can easily begin to feel alone or isolated. And if they live by themselves, that feeling is even more exacerbated. But as a family caregiver, you can help see that their feelings don’t become out of hand or so severe that they become depressed—which can cause another whole set of problems.
Today’s technology—while befuddling for some seniors—can also be a blessing in disguise, especially for seniors trying to stay in touch with family and friends.
- Phone. Of course, the phone has always been a wonderful way of staying connected. These days the options are so much greater than the once-upon-a-time landlines. Don’t misunderstand, landlines are great if no other telephonic means is possible. But today’s smart phones offer so much more in the way of connection and enjoying that connection to the nth degree. And besides phone calls, there are texting options on most phones that allow quick communication just to say hi or check in.
- Computer. It’s simple to stay connected via email. But you can download Skype on practically any computer and with a few quick steps, set it up so that your loved one can have a visual communication with someone—be they family or friend. The beauty of Skype, at least using it that way, is it’s free! Skyping can also be done on mobile devices, by downloading the Skype app.
- Facebook / Social Media. The computer and other mobile devices also allow for connections—both old and new—through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms. While Facebook is relatively easy and a lot of seniors are using it, some of the others may be a bit more difficult to understand or navigate. But with your help and a little patience, most social media is easy to use, once the basics are figured out.
According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, just over one-half of Americans age 65 and older use the Internet or e-mail. The same study says that 70 percent of older adults online use the Internet on a daily basis. In addition, social networking is increasing in that age group and 11 percent of adults age 65 and older own and use a smart phone.
So it’s pretty clear that seniors in large numbers are not only considering, but embracing today’s technology as a means for connecting with family and friends. They’re also using it for entertainment and hobbies, researching and accessing information about health topics, and managing their daily tasks, like bill paying, online shopping, etc.
Given the fact that so many seniors are online and connected, technology also allows you as the caregiver to check in with them more often, even though you may not be able to physically stop by their house daily. Technology is here to stay. Why not make it work for you, and your loved one?
