Keeping yourself healthy when you’re a family caregiver is not as difficult as it seems. You’ll need to focus on some key areas to help yourself stay healthy.
Get as Much Sleep as You Can
When you’re getting enough sleep, you’re able to face the challenges of your day much more readily. Getting enough sleep, though, isn’t as easy always as just deciding that you want to get more sleep. Start by going to bed at a reasonable time and work with your doctor to find solutions if you still find it to be difficult.
Limit Alcohol, Caffeine, and Nicotine
Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are all common substances that you might use daily or even now and again. The problem is that these substances can easily become crutches that cause you to rely on using more and more of them. Caffeine, for example, can easily help you to wake up in the morning, but before you know it you’re needing more and more caffeine to keep you going during the day and crashing when you don’t have it.
Move Your Body
You don’t have to be a bodybuilder in order to get the benefits from moving your body regularly. Use gentle movements that you enjoy. Take a walk around the block or play with a favorite pet. If you incorporate more movement into the activities that you already do, you’re going to find them more enjoyable and you’ll be more likely to continue doing them.
Seek out Other People
You can’t go without other people for very long. You might be busy and therefore find social engagements to be more complicated, but they’re still important. Avoid isolating yourself so that you feel completely alone. Join a support group, call a friend, and reach out to others.
Do at Least One Activity You Love Every Day
Everyone has at least one activity that they love to do. Yours might be reading or knitting or even going out with a friend to play pool. Whatever your activity is, make sure that you’re doing something that you love every day.
If you’re not able to do all of these every day, don’t beat yourself up. Do what you can, when you can.
