Using Email as an Elder Care Tool

Elder Care in Crestline OH

Elder care is not like it used to be. Many of today’s seniors are technologically savvy and enjoy using a wide array of tech devices to make their lives simpler and more entertaining. If you are a family caregiver for this type of modern senior, email may be the perfect tool for you to add to your elder care routine. By utilizing email and all of its features you can simplify your planning, streamline your communication, and make many of your tasks faster and easier.

Try these ideas to integrate email into your elder care efforts with your seniors:

• Start a dedicated address. The first step in making email part of your care journey is creating a dedicated, separate email address for your parents that only you and their elderly health care services provider knows. This makes it easy for you to communicate within your care network and keep up with messages without sifting through messages from many other people. Be sure you do not share this email address with any groups, stores, or anything else to prevent the inbox getting flooded with junk mail.

• Use the calendar feature. Take advantage of the calendar feature to send reminders to your parents for things like doctor’s appointments, organization meetings, medication or treatment changes, or even family birthdays. You can set the calendar to send an alert the day or a few hours before so your parents are ready to do what they need to do.

• Send messages. Particularly if you are a distance caregiver, email gives you the chance to communicate with your aging loved ones in a way that is fast, easy, convenient, and fits around your schedule. It can sometimes be difficult to schedule a phone call for every day, but you can set aside a few minutes to send an email in the morning or the afternoon so that your loved ones know you are thinking about them. You can also let your children email them and send pictures so that they can keep in touch with their grandparents. This is also a great way for them to send you messages about things that they need, questions that they need to ask, or issues they are having so you can resolve them.

• Status updates. Create a form that includes questions about your parents’ daily care and activities and send it to their elderly health care services provider. Have her fill it out each day and email it to you so that you can keep track of what they did, if they followed through with their medication or other treatments, if they were experiencing any new or worsened symptoms, if recent symptoms were getting better, or anything else that you are concerned about. This gives you peace of mind that your parents are receiving the care and assistance that they need and deserve on a daily basis.
