4 Energy Saving Tips to Help Seniors Save Money During the Winter

Senior Care in Mt. Gilead OH

One of the most common concerns with elder care is their struggle to make ends meet when they are on a tight budget, especially during the winter when their energy costs are more than they are used to paying. Fortunately, there are several things that seniors and their in-home care providers can do both inside and outside of the home to help seniors prepare for the cold months and keep their energy costs down.

Heating Maintenance

Regular maintenance of the furnace, including making sure the system is clean and in good working order is one of the most important things to do that ensures the furnace is not working harder than it needs to. Change the air filters regularly, preferably once a month. Make sure all vents and registers are clean and free from any blockage. If the senior has difficulties going outdoors, ask the senior care providers to check the outside unit to make sure there isn’t any leaves or other debris on or around the unit.

Check the Windows and Doors

One of the best ways to save on energy costs is by installing Energy Star windows. Replacing single-pane windows can significantly reduce the energy costs. Installing storm windows will also help to keep the heat in and reduce energy costs. Windows and doors should have weather stripping and/or caulking that is in good condition. It is also helpful to place a door draft stopper at the bottom of all entrance doors. Elderly caregivers should pay close attention to the doors and windows to ensure they have not been left opened.

Programmable Thermostats

The thermostat is used to control the temperature in the home, so if there are windows and/or doors near the thermostat it may affect the temperature setting. Make sure the thermostat is working correctly and that all doors and windows near the thermostat are sealed tightly and well insulated. Ask elderly caregivers to routinely check to make sure all heat sources, such as lamps are away from the thermostat. If possible, switch to a programmable thermostat, which allows the temperature to be adjusted automatically according to need. For example, it can be turned down while the senior is sleeping and then to automatically go up when they awaken.

Additional Steps to Reduce Energy Costs

Reducing hot water use is a great way to reduce energy costs. Encourage the senior and/or the senior caregiver to use cold water when doing dishes and laundry. When using a dishwasher, only wash full loads. When possible encourage seniors to take showers instead of baths (this is typically safer as well). Other steps to reduce energy use and costs may include:

  • Reduce oven use whenever possible. Instead use devices, such as slow-cookers, microwaves and countertop grills.
  • Clean the lint filter in the dryer after each load.
  • Seal gaps, openings and cracks around wiring and pipes.
  • Add insulation to the crawl space, attic and other exterior areas.
  • Make sure heaters and radiators are clean and not blocked by furniture or other items.
  • Unplug all electrical devices when not in use.
  • Close curtains when the sun goes down to retain heat.

Many of these energy saving tips can be done by the seniors themselves or with the assistance of their in-home care provider. If possible, arrange for a professional energy audit, which often includes a representative of the energy provider comes to the home for a thorough inspection to determine where energy use can be reduced. It may be best to have an elderly caregiver present during the inspection to ensure all questions are addressed and answered. Many nonprofit, community and government organizations provide energy assistance programs to low-income seniors during the winter months. If you have questions about where to get assistance or other ways to reduce energy costs during the winter, contact the energy provider for your elderly loved one.
