3 Ways to Help Mom Adapt with Alzheimer’s

Home Care in Shelby OH

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease. Signs and symptoms of it will continue to grow more significant as the years pass. If your mother has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she may have a difficult time not just accepting this, but learning to adapt.

Adaptation is an integral part of life. Nothing really remains the same. Friends we had moved away, we lose touch with people, loved ones pass away, and other challenges come our way.

If you’re wondering how you can best support your mother, below are three ways you may be the best support system she needs right now.

Encourage her to stay active.

Activity is so important for people of all ages. For somebody who is dealing with Alzheimer’s, they can still maintain a high quality of life. There are probably plenty of things your mother can still do and enjoy.

At first, she may not feel like doing anything. She may honestly believe the best years of her life are over and there’s no point in exercising, spending time with friends or loved ones, or pursuing interests that she’s had for a long time.

Keep encouraging her to stay active and, if needed, provide the kind of physical support necessary to help her do just that. If you don’t live close enough to her or don’t have the time for that, talk to her about home care services.

Encourage and support.

Talk to other family members and friends of hers. Get them on the phone, explain what’s going on, and encourage them to call her regularly, ask questions about what she’s doing, and offer the kind of emotional support she’s going to need.

Whether your mother is living alone, with your father, or someone else, it can feel isolating, this diagnosis. When your mother is surrounded by people who care about her, it will be more difficult for her to withdraw.

Help her plan for the future.

Having a great plan for the future is one of the best ways you can support your mother through this situation. When she develops a plan, when she has an idea of what she’s going to do, where she will live, even if it’s to remain home, and the things she still wants to do, she may be more inclined to take care of herself.

Just because your mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s doesn’t mean the end is already here. She can still enjoy life, if she stays focused on it.
