What Can You Do to Help a Loved One with Vision Problems Continue to Live Independently?

Home Care in Crestline OH

Loved ones with vision problems can face many different challenges, but the scariest one can be the thought of being force to give up their independence. Some small changes can make a huge difference for your loved one, even helping her keep her living situation the way that she wants it.

Use Lighting, Drapes, and Mirrors Wisely

Glare and poor lighting can combine to create big problems for a loved one who has vision problems. If you add in mirrors bouncing that glare around the room, you can see how that problem would be compounded. Pay special attention to how mirrors and even large pictures in glass frames are hung. If they’re arranged in such a way that they capture and reflect too much sun, you might want to move them. Use window sheers, blinds, and drapes to help control natural lighting. Also make sure that you include plenty of lighting for evening and darker days.

Choose Contrasting Colors

Contrasting colors can help a loved one who has vision problems distinguish barriers. This is true with dinnerware and cutlery, but it’s especially true when moving through a room. Work with your loved one to determine which colors contrast the best for her so that you can start changing items over. The best options are bright colors that are at opposite ends of the color wheel from each other.

Choose Contrasting Textures

Contrasting colors can help your loved one to see differences a little more readily, but contrasting textures can help her even if contrasting colors aren’t enough. Try buying furniture or throws that have specific and distinct textures to help her distinguish between types of furniture. Cover light switches and outlet covers with textured wallpaper to help your loved one to find them more easily.

Find Out What Else Helps Your Loved One

You and your loved one might need to experiment a bit to find out what else works for her. She may need a combination of different tactics to help her most effectively. What works for everyone else may not be as beneficial for her. Throughout the process, make sure that you’re also keeping up with your loved one’s eye doctor and regular doctor appointments to make sure that nothing is getting worse.

Working with your loved one’s elder care providers, other family members, and doctors can help your loved one continue to adapt to living independently.
