What Elders Need to Know About Dental Hygiene

Elder Care in Lexington OH

Dental problems become an even bigger problem among elderly adults than it does for any other age group. By not properly caring for their teeth, they could be at risk for a number of oral problems and gum diseases. Although age is not the only factor that causes hygiene problems, some medical conditions can make it much more difficult for the elder to floss and brush their teeth.

If this is true for your elderly parent, a senior care provider may be needed to assist the elder with their oral care. Understanding what oral problems could be at risk for will ensure that your loved one properly cares for their teeth.

Possible Oral Problems

  • Uneven jaw issues. This occurs when the elder loses a tooth, but never replaces the tooth. The result is a shift in teeth placement.
  • Tooth loss. The cause of tooth loss is usually gum disease.
  • Gum disease. If food is left in between teeth, dentures or bridges do not fit properly in the elder’s mouth, they are not eating a healthy diet, nor have other diseases, your loved one may be at a high risk for gum disease.
  • Loss of taste. An older adult’s senses begin fading away as they age, including their sense of taste. Certain medications, dentures, and health problems could also be a factor in causing this to happen.
  • Darkened teeth.  If your loved one has spent a lifetime consuming foods and drinks that cause stains, such as coffee, the elder will be more prone to darkened teeth.
  • Dry mouth. Older adults may have a reduced flow of saliva as a result of some medications, cancer treatments, and certain diseases.

How Seniors Can Keep Their Mouths Healthy

In order to keep your loved one’s teeth and gums strong and healthy, there are certain steps that have to be taken. Here are just a few ways your loved one can prevent the previous oral problems from happening to them.

  • Brush their teeth at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride.
  • Floss at least once a day to remove food particles between each tooth.
  • Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice a day.
  • Get regular checkups from a dentist to determine if there are any cavities or other problems that need to be treated right away.

Oral hygiene is important at any age, but especially for older adults. Encourage them to take these steps for a healthier, stronger mouth.
