Congrats, You Have Snail-Mail!

Senior Care in Lexington OH

Getting a personal letter or card in the mailbox can make someone’s day brightener, and this is especially true for seniors.  They spend a lot of time alone and sometimes a letter may be the only contact they have all day from someone they know.  It’s a small favor to do for someone and there is so much joy to be had by the receiver.

For one thing, it means that the senior has not been forgotten, although sometimes they tend to think so because of the lack of personal contact.  They will appreciate that fact alone when it comes to getting a letter.  Plus, it can be good therapy for the senior if he or she answers the person with a letter. The senior will benefit in writing a return letter because it will keep the mind active.  The sheer act of the physical writing will help, too, as it will keep the eye-hand coordination in check, the movement of the pen will keep the hands active, and the mind will have to come with ideas of what to say in the letter beyond the standard, “Hi, how are you?”  The whole experience can be a positive one.   If the senior is lucky, this whole experience may be the start of an ongoing letter exchange.  This is a fun and healthy thing to do.  In between letters, it gives the senior something to look forward to.

In fact, there are programs that can be found on the Internet that connects people together for the purpose of exchanging snail mail.  One such site is “The Letter Exchange.”  Interested persons subscribe to the service for a fee and then receive the booklet that is published three times a year.  Subscribers then reply to listings that are of interest.  The person receiving the letter responds to an address and includes a code number, thereby protecting personal addresses from being known.  Find out more at http://www.letter-exchange.com/write.html.

Another site is “Postcrossing”.  This site is for those who desire to send postcards within this country or abroad.  Start by sending a few cards to the addresses provided by the site and you will randomly receive a card from somewhere in the world.  There is no long term commitment involved, which is different than having a person you write to on a continuing basis.  Check it out at www.postcrossing.com.

Letters and cards are a good for mind and the soul.  So write one today!
